Pertamina EP Business Unit (UBEP) Sangasanga & Tarakan once again succeed in increasing its oil production up to 5,359 barrel per day on June 20, 2009. It is the highest production that has ever been reached for this business unit after the previous production of 5,122 barrel per day.

Satoto Agustono, the General Manager of UBEP Sangasanga Tarakan stated his gratitude and thankful for this achievement. “The additional production is gained from the perforation activity in NKL 993 well,” he explained. Moreover Satoto said that UBEP Sangasanga Tarakan is striving to increase its oil production level in the future.

Satoto said that in 2009, UBEP Sangasanga Tarakan is targeted to produce 4,800 barrel per day. “While the monthly target in June is 4,751 barrel per day and we hope that our production in July could reach up to 5,600 barrel per day,” he stated.

Pertamina UBEP Sangasanga Tarakan is one of Pertamina EP business unit. It is assigned to manage the working area in Sangasanga and Tarakan. The working area covers 5,325.5 Ha in Sangasanga, 6,181.1 Ha in Anggana/NKL, and 1,840 Ha in Samboja.

Those fields used to be under the management of TAC Pertamina-Medco Kalimantan. Pertamina EP take over the management and operation of Sangasanga Tarakan field due to the end of the TAC Pertamina-Medco Kalimantan on October 14, 2008. Further, started on October 15, 2009 the operation is conducted under the management of Pertamina EP UBEP Sangasanga and Tarakan.

The history of oil and gas upstream activities in Sangasanga and Tarakan is started by the operation of NIMH (Nederlandsch-Indische Industrie en Handel Maatchappij) in 1897-1905. Next the operation was handed over to BPM (Batavia Petroleum Maatschappij) in 1905-1942. Japan also has the operation experience in Sangasanga Tarakan in 1942-1945. Next, there were several take over from BPM/SHELL/PERMINA/PERTAMINA in 1945-1972, Tipco Tesoro in 1972-1992, PTEN-MEDCO E&P in 1992-2008, and starting on October 15, 2008, Sangasanga Tarakan is under the management of Pertamina EP.
